We had the great pleasure of being invited out to Mariposa Farm last week to sample some of the many cheeses that Ian & Suzanne represent. In addition to raising ducks, geese, chickens & pigs, Ian & Suzanne distribute a number of high quality Quebec products, including an extensive selection of Quebec Cheeses. In fact, Suzanne has personally visited over 80 of the 120 Quebec Cheese makers and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Quebec artisanal cheese industry.
Mariposa Chef, Nick Johnston, was on hand & treated the guests to an assortment of house made breads, jams & jellies.
Our goal, was to identify 2-3 spectacular cheeses that we would add to our very small selection of local cheeses. We hope to be introducing these cheeses to our retail store over the next few weeks.
It was a spectacular spring day and the farm was full of life - and I am not only referring to the guests! Some of Ottawa’s most innovative Chefs were in attendance representing businesses like the Whalesbone, Allium, the Piggy Market, and many more.
One of Ian’s sows had just given birth to a dozen piglets. In total there were two sows, 21 piglets, and a third sow ready to deliver any day. Ian’s pigs are a beautiful mixture of wild boar, berkshire and tamworth breeds and were a rainbow of colours including brown, pink and spotted. Most of these little piggies will end up on the tables of Ottawa’s finest restaurants.
Ian & Suzanne are pioneers of Ottawa’s local food movement and firmly believe that supporting a sustainable farm economy is critical to today’s rural development. They are members of the National Farmers Union, through which farm families sharing common goals are able to work together to benefit their farms and communities.
If you would like to visit the farm, they serve Brunch every Sunday from 11am to 1pm and duck is always on the menu! For details and directions visit their website.
