Ottawa’s Baobab Youth Drummers have just returned from Africa where they drummed, danced, and lived within the Ghanaian community of Dagbamate, and toured throughout Ghana.

There are two opportunities to take in this performance at the NAC 4th stage – on Friday September 23rd or Saturday September 24, 7:30 pm both days.

Tickets are $30.00 and are available online at Ticketmaster or at the door, however two lucky Red Apron clients will have a chance to win a pair of tickets for 2, for either the Friday or Saturday performance. The first person to email us at theladies@redapron.ca with the answer to the following skill testing question will be able to choose between two tickets to the Friday or Saturday performance.  The second person to email with the answer will get the remaining set of tickets.

As we do every year, the Red Apron will be closed Canada Day (July 1) and the following day (July 2nd) so that we can celebrate.  From June 27th to June 30th our fridges and freezers will be well stocked with local & organic items to help you celebrate in style.  On Thursday, June 30th we will have a Canada Day Picnic meal which includes:

BBQ Beef Brisket made using local Fitzroy Beef
Whole Wheat Pasta Salad with Fresh Herbs
Mixed Greens with Shaved Fennel & ‘Suntech’ Cucumbers
‘True Loaf’ Square Bun
Lemon Pound Cake with Local Berries & Creme Fraiche

Happy Canada Day!

Over the next few weeks, the Arts Court lawn at Daly and Nicolas Streets will transform into a lush, colourful, edible, community collaboration. Jennifer Cook is one of two artists selected by a jury in February after a call went out for artists to propose how they would involve the community in growing food at the gallery. She has drawn up designs for a series of vegetable gardens, referencing culinary themes, colour combinations and the patterns of traditional quilts. With the help of clients at Operation Come Home, Cook started seeds indoors, and is ready to prepare the garden site into which these baby plants and many different vegetable seeds will be grown.

The intention of Cook’s garden is to provide a site for the public to learn how to grow food, contribute their food-growing knowledge, and work alongside the artist throughout the growing and harvesting season. Workshops will be held during the summer and fall, and will cover both food and art-making activities.

Food from the garden will be shared with individual participants, The Ottawa Mission and Operation Come Home.

Cook is hoping the community will roll up their sleeves and dig in for the first stage of the garden construction – A Community Work Bee.
