Baobab Drummers at Cube Gallery

This coming Thursday April 14th, 2011

6:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Join the Baobab Youth Performers and members of CHEZA as we celebrate Ottawa’s African Community.  Enjoy an evening of African food, dance, drumming and original art in support of the Baobab Youth Performers ‘Footsteps to Ghana’ campaign.

This talented group of young drummers and dancers will visit the village of Dagbamete, Ghana under the guidance and instruction of noted African master drummer Kwasi Dunyo, longtime teacher and mentor to Kathy Armstrong, Baobab’s founder and director.  “I have been going there since 1990, so Baobab has strong roots in this village,” Armstrong says. “This is the third group of young people I have taken there to do workshops, forge relationships with people in the village, and strengthen ties between our communities.”

Baobab Youth members have previously assisted with village infrastructure and educational projects, donated clothing and sports equipment while taking part in drumming and dancing workshops and cultural immersion.   “Ottawa-Gatineau has the fourth-largest African population in Canada, and the second-fastest growing African community,” says Cube Gallery’s Don Monet. “This is an opportunity for us to revel in a rich culture that is part of what makes this city vibrant and exciting. It is also an opportunity for us to support the work Kathy does in Ghana while giving our kids the cultural experience of a lifetime.”

Africa night at Cube Gallery will feature African guitar grooves with Paul and Loic from CHEZA, plus fine art by noted African artist Chiconzero (Chiko) Chazunguza, a Zimbabwean artist living in Ottawa.“My art is inspired by the collective of family, community and government. I am honoured to support the Baobab Youth at this event,” he says.

Tickets for Africa  Night at Cube Gallery are $20 per person.  To reserve your spot for an evening of African food, drumming and dancing, please call Cube Gallery at 613-728-1750.

Thursday March 24 - Dive!

Jeremy Seifert, USA, 2010Inspired by a curiosity about the United States’ careless habit of sending food straight to landfills, the multi award-winning documentary DIVE! follows filmmaker Jeremy Seifert and friends as they dumpster dive in the back alleys and gated garbage receptacles of Los Angeles’ supermarkets. In the process, they salvage thousands of dollars worth of good, edible food resulting in an inspiring documentary that is equal parts entertainment, guerrilla journalism and call to action.

Wednesday March 30 - La reine malade

Pascal Sanchez, Quebec, 2009, 90 mins, French with English sub-title

Since taking charge of his parents’ Hautes Laurentides hives in 1998, Anciet Desrochers has witnessed a spectacular collapse of the world’s bee colonies – a collapse that endangers our food systems and our ecosystems. This film is the story of a beekeeper who does things differently, with great success. Over the past several seasons, Pascal Sanchez has documented the Desrochers family’s creativity and passion for their age-old profession, their use of traditional and modern techniques to protect their queens from predators and bad weather, and their concern about our food system and declining pollination. Anciet’s efforts to develop virus- and disease-resistant queens and strengthen his colonies have brought him international renown as an expert on sustainable agriculture, but, as Sanchez’s film shows, he’s not interested in fame: he just loves bees.

The Reel Food Film Festival is organized by WIAM, Just FoodUSC and the Ottawa Good Food Box

Come Hike with us

March 14, 2011

On Sunday May 1st join the Red Apron, and other members of our community for the 9th annual Hike for Hospice.  If you have lived in Ottawa for any amount of time, then you are probably aware of the good work that is being done at the Hospice at Maycourt.

The Hospice at May Court is a community-based organization providing support and practical help for people and their families who are facing a life-threatening illness. Too many of us know someone who who has needed their services.  The Hospice at Maycourt has been there to provide comfort and care to so many, and the Hike is our opportunity to give back to an organization whose staff and volunteers provide a much needed service.

For four years the Red Apron has been fueling the Hikers after their walk or run by providing an assortment of freshly made sandwiches on fresh Art-is-in bread and wraps.  And this year we will be there for a 5th year!

This is a wonderful community event that brings out all ages and abilities for a fun time and a good cause.  Please join us this year.  The Registration Form is available on their website, along with copy of the Spring Newsletter which provides details on participants and fundraising goals.

The registration fee for each hiker is $20 and includes Hike Tee-Shirt, Coffee & Tim Bits, one of the best sandwiches you will ever eat, great music, Little Ray’s Reptiles & Kid’s Zone, and much more.

Rain or Shine, this event is always lot of fun.
